A UN panel on Wednesday agreed to raise the recommended maximum speeds for self-driving cars in certain situations from 60 to 130 kilometers per hour, and lane changes will be allowed.
International experts from the World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations signed the recommendations given by the working group earlier this month.
The regulations are expected to take effect in January, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe said.
She reported that the European Union is already implementing the implementation process.
More than 50 countries around the world have agreed to the agreement, including 27 EU countries.
The United States, China, and others, however, regulate autonomous driving to its own standards.
