The US fish and wildlife (FWS) is calling for people to eat Hai Ly mouse to protect the local ecosystem.
FWS made a call for annual national abuse species (from February 24 to February 2), contributing to highlighting animals that threaten local ecosystems across the country, according to Popular Science. Experts especially focus on Hai Ly rats, mammals that sell aquariums that look like hybrids between giant rats and Hai Ly.
Hai Ly mouse is a native animal in South America, but was taken to Louisiana for the first time in the 1930s to meet the needs of the fur industry. In the early 1940s, the storm destroyed Hai Ly mouse farms, accidentally creating conditions for this voracious and fast reproductive animal to escape into the wild. The rats give birth on average two litters per year. A mature mouse weighs up to 9 kg, can consume the amount of plants equal to its own weight every day.
It is estimated that the annual sea mouse consumes plants on 36,422 hectares of coastal swamps. The size of the damage that they affect everything from the flood model, agriculture to public health. Thanks to the decades of conservation campaigns, it is estimated that the damage drops to about 2,226 hectares by 2024, but Hai Ly mouse will continue to cause trouble if the number is not controlled. Currently, they also cause problems in the Atlantic coastal region and part of California.
Although not common food in the US, Hai Ly mouse can be cooked in different ways depending on their own taste. According to FWS, their meat is very lean and tastes like rabbit meat. However, like any wild animal, cooks need to prepare meat properly to avoid pollution. In addition to eating Hai Ly mouse, authorities also emphasized other options such as Northern Fruit Fish, An invasive carp, wild pigs, even green Da Da.
