Internet Archive and Google, first clients of Wikimedia Enterprise

The Wikimedia Foundation has announced that the technological multinational Google and the non-profit digital library Internet Archive are the first companies that have contracted the services of its payment service Wikimedia Enterprise.

This organization, which hosts Wikipedia, nourishes free collaborative projects and is funded through donationswhich it uses to build ‘software’ experiences for reading, contributing, and sharing information.

The Wikimedia Foundation launched Wikimedia Enterprise in October last year, its first free encyclopedia paid service aimed at large companies that use content from this non-profit organization for commercial purposes, both in its products and in its tools.

This platform offers more efficient access to Wikimedia content through a series of APIs designed specifically for high-volume reuse of content and also allows customers to get updates on the information they use.

This week the Wikimedia Foundation announced that the Internet Archive and Google will be the first customers of this paid service, which will be able to take advantage of Wikimedia content “in very different ways” according to the president of the Wikimedia Foundation, Lane Becker.

These companies will be able to preserve the citations in Wikipedia or promote the so-called knowledge panels, information boxes that appear in the Google Knowledge Graph, the structured knowledge base used by Google to improve the results obtained with its search engine.

“We look forward to deepening our partnership with Wikimedia Enterprise, invest Going further into long-term sustainability of the foundation and the knowledge ecosystem it continues to build,” said Google product manager Tim Palmer.

For his part, the director of the Internet Archive Wayback Machine, Mark Graham, has pointed out that with this association with Wikimedia Enterprise, the company will be able to “archive more information from the web more quickly and reliably.”

According to The Verge, Becker has revealed that the service he will offer to Google is still in its early stages, although has not advanced how it will use this company Wikimedia Enterprise.

Finally, the Foundation has indicated that organizations and companies of any size will be able to access Wikimedia Enterprise offerings at a variable price, depending on their volume of use.

Companies will be able to register on the Wikimedia Enterprise website for a free trial account so that they can test the service before purchasing it.
