Smartphones must have an ecological design and show energy labeling in Europe

Mobile phones and tablets that are marketed in the European Union (EU) As of June, they must meet ecological design requirements and show an energy label with the aim of prolonging the useful life of the product and facilitating the purchase decision to consumers.

On June 20, electronic device manufacturers must comply with the ecological design regulations and the energy labeling regulations, if they want their products to be sold in EU countries.

The new requirements will affect wireless phones, ‘smartphones’, basic mobile phones as well as blackboard type tablets, which do not have a keyboard and use a mobile operating system. The devices with folding screens, tablets with computer operating system and smartphones for high security communications are left out.

The objective of the ecological design regulations is to extend the useful life of electronic devices, and therefore requires that they be resistant to falls, scratches, water and dust, its battery retains at least 80 percent of their capacity in 800 load cycles and have longer ‘software’ updates.

It also has requirements for repair. Specifically, it requires manufacturers to facilitate rules on disassembly and repair as well as essential spare parts for seven years after the end of the sales of the product model in the EU market.

The Energy Labeling Regulations, on the other hand, intends that consumers access the necessary data to be able to make informed purchases in relation to energy efficiency, battery autonomy and its duration in cycles, their resistance to free falls, the level of protection and degree of repair.

The European Commission has shared the example of label, which will have a QR code for consumers to access complete and detailed information, which has also recently published the Institute for Diversification and Saving of Energy, attached to the Ministry for Ecological Transition through the Secretariat of Energy State.
