Crunchyroll generated subtitles cause controversy due to their poor quality

Crunchyroll, the anime content platform in ‘streaming’, has a problem with the subtitles and translations generated by artificial intelligence (AI), a tool with which it intended to reach a larger audience and that has generated complaints about its poor quality.

Without meaning, without punctuation and without hiding that chatgpt has been used. This is how Crunchyroll has presented the users of the Japanese Animation Series – in different languages to the users of its platform.

The use of AI has taken some subscribers by surprise, although last year, the president of this platform, Rahul Purini, confirmed to The Verge his intention to use generative tools to offer subtitles and transcripts. But its quality has left much to be desired.

This situation led, for example, to eliminate the first episode of ‘The Yuzuki Family Four Sons’ and recently, the German subtitles of ‘necronomic and the cosmic horror show’ showed clearly that they had been generated by Chatgpt, as the Pixel user shared in the Bluesky social network.

“They informed us that an external supplier used subtitles generated by AI, which violates our agreement. We are investigating the matter and working to correct the error,” said a Crunchyrol spokesman for Engadget.

Crunchyroll, owned by Sony, offers access to a film and anime series catalog, with direct premieres from Japan. Precisely, the AI was going to help translate the new releases, with the idea of removing the followers of the anime of illegal downloads.
