Speedtest announces the ranking of Vietnamese network operators for the first time

Ookla, the unit behind the Speedtest tool, made its own report for Vietnam for the first time, in which VinaPhone leads in 5G speed.

“Vietnam’s telecommunications market has recently had many notable activities, especially the deployment of 5G and the continuous development of mobile and fixed bandwidth services,” Affandy Johan, an analyst at Ookla, told VnExpress. “These changes make this the right time to provide a more detailed look at network performance and user experience in Vietnam.”

The Speedtest Connection Report in the first half of 2025 focuses on two main categories including mobile networks and fixed networks, including separate rankings such as best network, highest speed network, highest rated network from users, with evaluation period from January to June in Vietnam. Viettel was honored as the best mobile network and best 5G network among providers in Vietnam in the first half of the year, when its connection score was higher than the other two carriers.

“Connection Score” is an index that combines factors such as speed score, web browsing performance metrics, and video streaming capabilities, thereby evaluating the overall experience provided by the mobile service provider.

Meanwhile, Vinaphone creates an impression of speed as the fastest 5G provider in Vietnam with 78.11 points. Vinaphone’s average 5G download speed reached 594.16 Mbps, ranking above Viettel 421.61 Mbps and MobiFone 306.5 Mbps.

Meanwhile, in terms of general mobile connection speed, including 3G and 4G, Viettel is the fastest service provider, with an average download speed of 165.03 Mbps, above Vinaphone 78.69 Mbps and MobiFone 68.45 Mbps.

Viettel is also the network operator with the highest scores in connection and gaming experience, while FPT Telecom leads in online video viewing experience.

Hue and Da Nang are the cities with the best connection records. In particular, Hue was recorded to have a mobile network speed of 613.79 Mbps, while Da Nang’s fixed network reached 245.31 Mbps, both the highest among major cities.

Recently, Vietnam has had many breakthroughs in connection infrastructure. According to the September Speedtest Global Index, Vietnam ranked 13th globally in mobile network download speed and 11th in fixed network.

In the Speedtest Awards global ranking for network operators with the best performance in the first half of 2025, Vietnam also made a strong mark with two network operators honored in the “fastest” group in the world. In particular, Viettel ranked third in the Fastest Mobile Network category, synthesizing results from both 3G, 4G and 5G networks, ranking above Singapore’s Singtel. The fastest 5G mobile network also recorded VinaPhone ranked second, after a UAE network.

According to statistics from the Department of Telecommunications in June, Vietnam has six undersea fiber optic cable lines including AAG, IA, AAE-1, APG, ADC, SJC2, with a total design capacity of 80 Tbps, of which two lines ADC and SJC2 have just been put into operation. This year also marks the first time Vietnam owns the VSTN land fiber optic cable line with a design capacity of 4 Tbps, expandable to 12 Tbps. This is the foundation for high-speed connection, 5G network can be deployed widely.

According to analyst Affandy Johan, the fixed broadband network in Vietnam has improved significantly thanks to carriers deploying low-cost packages with a minimum speed of 300 Mbps. “All major carriers recorded improvements in download speeds, of which Viettel achieved outstanding results thanks to continuous investment in 5G deployment and network modernization,” he assessed.

According to this analyst, Vietnam’s current performance is still a gap compared to countries with more mature Internet infrastructure. However, the growth trend in Vietnam shows steady progress in both speed and user experience.
