Disc drives (HDDs) Due to their enormous storage capacity and lower price compared to flash memory drives, they remain essential in settings like “online” storage in data centers and the cloud or video surveillance (SSDs).
According to statistics gathered by Toshiba from Trendfocus, 259 million HDDs were shipped in 2021. Additionally, its total capacity increased by approximately a third from 2020 to 1,338 Zetabytes.
This information demonstrates not just the “excellent health” of the hard drives but also the fact that, as the technology business notes, “hard drives have never been sold with such a high overall volume of storage capacity.”
HDDs and flash drives “will continue to co-exist well into the future” given that the demand for storage space is increasing almost everywhere and that only hard drives can provide high storage capacity at the low cost demanded by data centers, the cloud, and other application environments, according to Rainer W. Kaese, Senior Director of Business Development of Toshiba Electronics Europe’s Storage Products division.
This storage technology is still crucial because of digital services like Industry 4.0, connected cars, “streaming” platforms, and social networks that continuously produce large amounts of data that are kept in data centers.
The fact that its capacity is always increasing as a result of technological advancements and that, as Toshiba noted, the price per Terabyte is falling also plays a role. Flash memory is more expensive in this regard and cannot be created in large enough quantities.
Since these settings act as media servers and control hubs for smart homes, businesses and households can also profit from HDD drives for network storage.
Whereas flash memory’s great performance would only be apparent when transferring a large number of little files, NAS hard drives are designed to meet the transfer speed requirements of the majority of household and corporate networks.
Contrarily, video security cameras provide a video feed that can be saved on hard drives. Toshiba claims that one of its strengths is high-speed data writing, and even concurrent recording of several high-definition (HD) video streams doesn’t present any issues.
The vast volumes of data produced by 4K and 8K cameras can be supported by HDDs because they have a lot of storage space and are inexpensive.
Small flash memory is typically more prevalent on storage personal computers, which means that consumers have less storage capacity than they did when similar devices had hard drives.
At the same time, users’ storage requirements are growing due to factors like the expansion of personal photo collections or the introduction of new, more complex games that can consume several dozen Gigabytes of storage space.
Despite the fact that these data are kept in the cloud on an external server, many people still prefer to have access to local storage due to cost and security concerns, which has made external hard drives “very popular.”
Similar to how hard drives and magnetic tapes are typically used to store data for long periods of time. According to Toshiba, hard drives cost a bit more than tape for a given capacity, but they gain advantages by providing faster access times when it’s important to recover papers or other sorts of files, including those needed for an audit. HDDs can also use deduplication algorithms to minimize the quantity of data that needs to be archived, which helps to cut expenses.
