We tested the HP Specter convertible notebook: a luxury

It allows you to edit high-quality videos and photos without taking a second. It serves to work and study thanks to the Office programs that it brings. And it even allows you to run video games. It is also an ideal tablet to watch series and movies on Netflix, videos on YouTube and broadcasts on Twitch. All in all, it is a robust and powerful tactile convertible for all uses and with a very careful design. It is the HP Specter x360 13-inch laptop, with 11th generation Intel Core i7 processor. We were able to try it for three weeks and it was a luxury.

It comes in a black and gray box worthy of a premium product, and the most important thing about the presentation: it includes a case black that serves as a cover to carry it from here to there.

The ignition is very fastjust 11 seconds from the button on the upper left edge of the Specter is pressed. When turning on, the images returned by the screen are of great quality. Powered by Intel Iris Xe graphics, it achieves sharp images and vivid colors, reaching a resolution of 1920 x 1080. It reproduces 99% of the sRGB color spectrum. In addition, it is equipped with Corning Gorilla Glass NBT antiglare.

The hinges between the keyboard and the screen of the HP Specter x360 allow it to become a very powerful tablet.

The design is another very high point of this notebook. It has an alloy chassis of aluminum that shows her elegant and gets along very well with the touch. It is also silver, which makes it combine with all the styles of a home or office.

Already open, the keyboard reaches almost to the edges, to take full advantage of the width of the equipment, and the keys have the typical small elevation of the notebooks and are flat. The keyboard is backlit, which allows working with low light or no light at all, and also adds beauty to the equipment.

Despite not being a very wide laptop, being 13 inches, the keyboard allows you to work without problems. You can type for hours like on a desktop PC keyboard. But this keyboard is a limitation for action video games, a point that will be developed later.

Recognize its owner

The Specter has a fingerprint reader and face recognition. The fingerprint sensor is under the keyboard, on the right edge. The Specter has a fingerprint reader and face recognition. The fingerprint sensor is under the keyboard, on the right edge.

To start using it, the HP Specter asks for an input pin to be fitted. It can also be configured to enable each session with the fingerprint and via face recognition.

We tested all three unlock modes and all three worked very well. With a detail: the equipment supports more than one fingerprint, so that two or more members of a family or work partners can enter their fingerprint in the system.

As for face recognition, only one admits. However, enabling one system does not disable the others. In other words, a single person can enter when the equipment recognizes their face, but everyone else will be able to enter with their fingerprint or with a password or pin.

The front camera that takes the face to enable the session and that also serves to carry out videoconferences by Zoom, Teams or others, has HD resolution.

The backlit keyboard allows you to work without ambient light. The backlit keyboard allows you to work without ambient light.

Above the audio that brings is Bang & Olufsen.

Regarding the software, it comes with Windows 10 Home, and you can access the upgrade to Windows 11. And the complete Office suite completes it.

For its technical specifications its power is not surprising, but it is worth highlighting. Only below the gaming laptops in this area, with an Intel Core i7-1165G7 processor, 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB memory or SSD, this machine supports a thousand and one tasks at a time. It weighs 1.27 kilo.

We tested it with several browsers open at the same time, one of them with YouTube running, plus a photo editing program and WhatsApp Web and nothing, it was never branded. And it jumps from one task to another like nothing.

In tablet mode, the keyboard is behind. In tablet mode, the keyboard is behind.

As for video games, we ran the League Of Legend, which although it does not have the maximum graphic demand, because it is online it needs a lot of iron. It went very well. It was never branded and had the necessary speed. But it was on the keyboard where the loose side was. Although you can play with the one that comes in the Specter, it is ideal to add a gamer one (with slightly more separated keys and mechanical bounce). And in terms of connectivity, the machine brings two Thunderbolt 4 ports and a single classic USB connector. But to play you need to add a mouse and a keyboard, so one of the two should go for one of the Thunderbolts.

Regarding the screen, although it is small for the gamer world, the small size makes up for it with the enormous quality of images it obtains, with which, in our opinion, it is not necessary to add a monitor to play.

The HP Specter doesn’t come with a gaming board anyway. It includes Intel Iris Xe graphics, designed for tasks of another type.

The field that beats dedicated gaming laptops is in its design, finishes and versatility (very powerful notebook + tablet).

Tablet mode

The touch can be used horizontally or vertically, it always responds. The touch can be used horizontally or vertically, it always responds.

The response of its touch interface is perfect. We tried pressing on the entire screen, with the equipment vertical or placing it above our head and the touch always responds.

Thanks to the hinge that connects the keyboard to the screen, can be rotated up to 360 degrees. This allows us to use the HP Specter x360 as a notebook, but also as a tablet, “hiding the keyboard under the screen.” It can even be used as a V device for presenting in small workspaces and for watching series or movies in bed.

Its advantage over traditional tablets is that it has a processing power of a high-end notebook, that is, infinitely higher than more expensive tablets.

On the other hand, by putting it vertical, the screen takes the new position without screen skipping. And like any tablet, add a virtual keyboard at the bottom of the screen.

The elegance of the Specter. It weighs a kilo and a quarter. The elegance of the Specter. It weighs a kilo and a quarter.

The equipment tested is around 350 thousand pesos in the country, but it always depends on its technical configuration, which can drive the price down or up. On the official page of HP in the United States it is 1,499 dollars.

A similar option is the 14-inch Lenovo ThinkPad X1Yoga Gen 6. It is also a convertible with an 11th generation Intel Core i7 processor. It is at 369,999 pesos.
