I usually do not like computer games that deal with time loops, mainly because most of the time it means you have to repeat the same tasks over and over again, which makes me lose interest, but the new game DeathLoop has changed the rules of the genre and it works great.
This is a first-person shooter game, developed by Arkane Studios and distributed by Bethesda Softworks, for PC and PlayStation 5.
The game takes place on a mysterious island, such as the “Lost” series, where anomalies occur in time, the same team of scientists learned to harness his desires and make the day come back again and again, so that there are no consequences for their actions. The islanders, not-so-nice people, can carry out their plot and unload any yoke (and even die), only to wake up and find that nothing really happened.
You’ll take on the role of Colette, a charming assassin who gets stuck in a loop and his only way out of it is to eliminate eight targets scattered around the island before the clock strikes midnight. If you do not kill everyone before the day is over it is as if you have done nothing. Same thing if you die before you complete the task – today it will reboot itself and so will your equipment.
So far as I heard about the game for the first time I was very worried, most of the time games ask you to reboot the same stage over and over again it quickly becomes exhausting. But here the developers have created a very unique mechanism to make sure that you do not fall into this trap, when the most important thing is that the death loop is not timed and you choose when and how to proceed.
Each day is divided into four periods of morning, noon, afternoon and evening, and the transition between the four counties of the island causes time to advance. The entire conduct of the locals, especially the targets, varies depending on the time the player enters the district and depending on the actions the player will perform in other districts. It’s a lot of trial and error until you know how to bring as many of the targets to the same district in that time period, and there is more than one way to complete the mission.
Your character is very diverse and can use attacks while wiping, parkour, various gadgets and various rifles. But the main part of the game is detective and will require a lot of reading and learning the action patterns of the targets. In addition to your character there is another character who remembers the events of the past day and she is Juliana, who is trying to keep you from stopping the loop and even spurs other characters to attack you.
Juliana’s character is another example of the innovation the game presents, this time in the online character. You have the choice to allow other human players, who play online, to take control of Juliana and try to prevent you from succeeding in the mission – a great idea that is executed in an extraordinary way.
In conclusion DeathLoop is a colorful game with an amazing design that takes us back to the happy sixties, and makes great use of the power of the new video cards and the PS5, but excels in groundbreaking gameplay in a genre that is so easy to fall into. A copy of the game was received by Adli United, the official importer of the “DEATHLOOP” game in Israel.
