After hitting the head of Hezbollah, the IDF continues to decimate the organizational chart of the Lebanese Shiite movement. The Israeli army announced on Sunday that it had killed a senior member of the armed Islamist movement, the day after a massive bombing in the southern suburbs of Beirut in which the leader of the organization, Hassan Nasrallah, was killed. According to a source close to the Lebanese team, this other leader was targeted in an airstrike on Saturday in the same sector.
The army “eliminated the terrorist Nabil Qaouq, commander of the security unit (…) of Hezbollah and member of the central council” of the organization, it said in a press release. He is “considered close to the leaders” of the formation and “has been directly involved” in “terrorist acts” against Israel, “even in recent days”, write the Israeli forces on their X account.
“He joined Hezbollah in the 1980s and was considered an important source of expertise in his field, having served as Deputy Commander of the Southern Region in the Operational Council, Commander of the Southern Region, and Commander Deputy of the Operational Council,” explains the Tsahal. The army vows to “continue to attack and eliminate the commanders of the terrorist organization Hezbollah and to take action against anyone who threatens the citizens of the State of Israel.”
The top of the movement gradually decimated
A source close to Hezbollah confirmed to AFP that Nabil Qaouq was killed in a strike on Saturday in the southern suburbs of Beirut, adding that he was a member of Hezbollah’s central council and responsible for security within the group. According to Reuters, supporters of the Shiite militia have shared messages of mourning for it since Saturday.
Nabil Qaouq was “one of the few senior leaders of Hezbollah still active”, noted on X the journalist from the British newspaper The Guardian Will Christou. According to him, the official was “one of the candidates expected to succeed Hassan Nasrallah at the head of Hezbollah”, but his assassination is now “the last blow to the group’s leadership, already decimated”.
