In the conflict between the police and the fans of the football club “Hajduk” from Split, 15 fans and 20 policemen were wounded or injured last night, but no one is endangered, it was said today at the press conference of the Zagreb police.
Today, the police told reporters in Zagreb the details of the incident that happened last night when hundreds of fans from the monitored column suddenly stopped on the A1 highway at the Desinec rest area between Zagreb and Karlovac.
They were 16 police officers who were there, attacked with batons, bottles, chains, stones, fire extinguishers, chairs, and bacilli lit a torch near the gas station.
Deputy Director General of the Police, Damir Barić, said that there were no indications that there would be an attack and pointed out that there could have been a fire and an explosion at the gas station.
Journalists were told that the attackers did not calm down on the order of the police, so they used firearms: two police officers fired into the air, and the third fired eight shots into the air, and then 11 into the concrete surface. At that time, as it was estimated, two young attackers, whose lives are not in danger, were most likely wounded.
It was pointed out at the press conference that the police officers used firearms because their lives were endangered, but also the lives of people who were at the gas station.
According to new data, two more attackers have gunshot wounds, and later sought help on their own at the Split hospital, but their wounds are not severe.
43 attackers were arrested, including one juvenile and 11 juveniles.
Last night, the Zagreb police announced that around 9:35 pm, during the organized monitoring of 1,600 Hajduk fans from Split who were returning from the game in Zagreb by buses, vans and cars, the fans stopped at the Desinec rest area on their own initiative and blocked all lanes. – the road in the direction of Karlovac. Several hundred of them physically attacked police officers from several police departments who accompanied them with their vehicles.
In order to repel the attack, the police, as it was stated at the time, used “coercive means”, including firearms, so the monitored column was brought back under control.
