At least five people were killed today (Monday) in the collapse of a high-rise building in the city of Abadan in southwestern Iran. According to the rescue squad that arrived at the scene, there are at least 80 more people left under the rubble of the 10-story building.
The collapsed building was used in part for residential apartments, while the other part was intended for commercial purposes, according to a report by the “Mehr” news agency. Iranian state television said emergency crews had been sent from other cities to assist in the rescue efforts.
Meanwhile, the head of the Khuzestan province’s justice system has ordered an investigation into the circumstances of the building’s collapse. The building owner and the contractor who was in charge of building the structure have already been arrested by the authorities.
