France has announced that it has decided to return its ambassadors to the United States and Australia, after the two countries signed an agreement, together with the United Kingdom, on a deal to purchase submarines worth about $ 40 billion. The decision, which is considered rare in France, was made by President Emanuel Macron.

Following France’s decision, the United States has issued an official statement saying it “regrets the European state’s decision to remove its ambassador from Washington.” France is “a vital partner and our oldest ally, we attach high value to the partnership between us”.

Australia, too, issued an official statement following France’s decision, saying that “although we are adamant about the decision, we appreciate France and will continue to work with Paris on many other issues, which are based on our common values.“
