Inflation in Britain rises to the highest level in 40

Official data showed on Wednesday that rising food prices pushed consumer price inflation in Britain to its highest level in 40 years last month, reaching 9.1 percent.

The data was in line with the results of a Reuters poll of economists.

“The rise in food prices compared to their decline a year ago has contributed to a significant increase” in inflation, the British Office for National Statistics said.

The bureau added that consumer prices rose 0.7 percent month-on-month in May.
