EU leaders discuss granting Ukraine candidate status

Brussels is hosting a meeting of the European Council on granting Ukraine the status of a candidate for EU membership. The European Commission approved the application last week, now the granting of candidate status must be approved by representatives of 27 European states.

“This will strengthen Ukraine. This will strengthen Europe. This is a decision in the name of freedoms and democracy that puts us on the right side of history,” Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, said ahead of the discussion.

A few hours before the start of the meeting, Ukraine’s application was supported by the European Parliament, adopting a resolution calling on EU governments to “act without delay.”

The leaders of Germany, France and Italy, the largest EU countries, as well as Romania, said during a visit to Kyiv last week that they would support Ukraine’s request.
