The EU claims her plan to rearma waiting for Putin to show will to peace

The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has promised to advance in the European Union Rearme Plan with the increase in defense expenditure during the telematic meeting called this Saturday by the United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer, to talk about Ukraine, from which he has also claimed the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, steps for peace.

“We reiterate our support for a high fire agreement in Ukraine,” said von der Leyen, who hopes that Moscow now also will show a willingness to move towards “just and lasting peace.”

The head of the Community Executive, however, has pointed out that the EU will not stay with crossed arms and, within the “hedgehog strategy”, will continue to support Ukraine in the political and military field.

A commitment also shared by the president of the European Council, António Costa, who wants Ukraine to be in a “position of strength” before the possible negotiations. “The EU actively contributes to reinforce Ukraine and to improve its defense through political, financial and military support,” he added.

He has also suggested that the ball is on the Kremlin roof: “Now Russia has to demonstrate that it has a political will to stop war.” Putin has not agreed for now to the agreement of high the temporary fire raised in recent days by his American counterpart, Donald Trump.
