The new Afghan rulers of the Taliban announced today that the United States has agreed to deliver humanitarian aid to that poor country on the brink of economic catastrophe, although they still refuse to recognize the government of that extremist group.

The Taliban said their talks with the United States in Qatar “went well”, the first direct since the US withdrawal from Afghanistan in late August.

They added that Washington agreed to release humanitarian aid to Afghanistan after an agreement not to link it to official recognition by the Taliban government.

The United States has made it clear that the Doha talks are in no way an introduction to recognizing the Taliban regime that came to power by force in mid.August.
