French Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin visited the Santé prison in Paris and met with former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who is being held there. The meeting took place in the presence of the prison director.
According to informed sources, issues of ensuring the security of the former head of the Fifth Republic were discussed. Even before Sarkozy began serving his sentence, Darmanin argued that guards should be commensurate with the prisoner’s high-ranking status. This statement caused a wave of criticism.
Earlier it was reported that the former president would serve his sentence in a solitary confinement cell measuring nine square meters; his walks would also be taken alone. The cell has a toilet and shower. A landline telephone will be installed for the president, as well as a TV – for 14 euros per month.
Let us recall that in September a Paris court found Sarkozy guilty of criminal conspiracy in the case of Libyan financing of his election campaign, sentencing him to five years in prison. According to the court, Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi gave about 50 million euros to finance the 2007 election campaign.
