The Israeli ambassador in Quito, Ze’ev Harel, informed the director of the department for Israelis abroad in the consular wing, Anat Avitar, during the night in order to inform the family and begin the process of moving the casket to Israel. The family received the bitter news and the department for Israelis abroad together with the embassy’s consul, Sagi Rabovski, accompany the case and assist in whatever is required.
The disaster in Ecuador occurs a day after the tragedy in Sinai in which Baruch Yona, 57 years old from Jerusalem, drowned at Shanti Beach in Be’ir Svir. Eyewitnesses to the drowning told N12 that the sea was rough compared to Sinai: “His children, aged 6 and 8, were in the water. They felt they were being swept away and called him. He helped them – but was unable to get out.”
