Discovery of Christian Viking coin intrigues scientists and challenges history

The piece dates from the end of the 9th century, probably between 860 and 870 AD, a critical period, when the Vikings had just conquered the kingdom of East Anglia, in eastern England, and were beginning to consolidate their dominance over the region.

The discovery draws attention because the Vikings of that time, at least in the traditional view of historiography, were pagans: worshipers of Odin and Thor, not Christian saints.

What is engraved on Viking coin?

On one side, the object shows the bearded face of a man with the Latin inscription “IOAN”, short for John. On the back, fragments of text translated by experts indicate the words “Batist and Evangelist”suggesting that the figure represented would be John the Baptist, Jesus’ cousin and the one who, according to the Bible, baptized him in the Jordan River.

According to coin historian Dr. Simon Coupland of the University of Cambridge, the discovery is as rare as it is disconcerting. He told the BBC that he had never seen a piece from the Carolingian period with the image of John the Baptist, which makes the find a symbolic and theological anomaly.

It’s not just the saint’s face that draws attention. Metallurgical analysis confirmed that it is an imitation of solid gold, a common currency in the Carolingian Empire, but adapted with a Scandinavian touch. And, unlike the standard of the time, in which European coins displayed portraits of kings and emperors, this example has a saint as the protagonist.

Why is the discovery of the Viking coin so surprising?

According to experts, this type of coin was typically minted by Scandinavians, and at this time, they were not yet Christians. The official conversion of the Nordic people to Christianity is usually dated decades later. This makes the presence of the image of John the Baptist in a piece of Viking origin something unexpected.

Scholars also claim that the piece was used as an amulet or adornment, and not just as currency. This fact reinforces the idea that its value could be symbolic, spiritual or even political, reflecting a period of cultural transition in England occupied by the Vikings.

The hypotheses that try to explain the mystery in the Viking coin

There is still no consensus on why the figure of John the Baptist is depicted on the coin, but some theories are gaining ground. One possibility is that the Vikings adopted Christian iconography as part of a broader effort to integrate into the predominantly Christian population from East Anglia.

Another possibility is that the pendant may have belonged to a local Christian who lived under Viking rule. A more provocative hypothesis is that some Vikings may have already converted to Christianity earlier than previously believed.

For a Viking, the figure of John the Baptist could be interpreted as a protective amulet or just an exotic design that demonstrated that the owner had connections to distant lands.

Constant contact with the Saxons and travel to the Byzantine Empire may also have introduced Christian symbols into Norse everyday life sooner than anticipated.

What is still open after the discovery?

Currently, the object is undergoing legal processes under the Treasure Act 1996 from the United Kingdom, awaiting further laboratory studies. The artifact is being analyzed by experts to determine if it is a treasure. If confirmed, Norwich Castle Museum will keep the piece.

However, many questions about the currency remain unanswered. It is not known why it portrays John the Baptist, or who created it. What it represents, however, is enough to raise questions: could it be that, instead of a rigid division between pagan invaders and Christian locals, we had a more fluid mix of beliefs and identities?
