Iran accuses the US of “laundering” its attacks against Iranian territory in its draft resolution before the IAEA

The Government of Iran has affirmed this Tuesday that the draft resolution presented by Washington before the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the highest governing body of the UN nuclear agency, aims to “whitewash the responsibility of the aggressors and criminals”, in reference to the US attacks against Iranian territory.

“The attacks by the Zionist regime and the United States on Iran’s nuclear facilities stopped verification activities and caused the agency’s inspectors to leave Iran for security reasons. Now, the United States wants to turn the aftermath of its illegal attack into a file against Iran,” said Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, on social media.

In this sense, he has pointed out the Trump Administration for “reversing responsibilities” by attacking Iranian facilities subject to “safeguards” and “disturbing nuclear security”, as well as the verification of technicians, but using the Board, in turn, to “put pressure” on Tehran.

“The Board of Governors should not be a place to whitewash military aggression and transfer its costs to the victim country. The attack on facilities under the agency’s supervision and the disruption of the verification process should be the subject of international responsibility of their authors, not a basis for issuing a resolution against a country that has been a victim of these actions,” he said.

In this way, he has reiterated that protection measures at nuclear facilities “are not strengthened with the drafting of resolutions”, but rather “with the condemnation” of these attacks, “respect for the rights of member countries, accountability and the return of the agency to its impartial path.”

The United States has submitted a draft resolution to the IAEA that calls on Tehran to provide information on the whereabouts of its enriched uranium and grant immediate access to technicians at its nuclear facilities, Bloomberg reported.

The four-page text will have to be voted on this week by the Board of Governors and also emphasizes support for a nuclear deal, while also calling on Tehran to engage “seriously and without preconditions” in the negotiations.

In June 2024, the Board approved a resolution – drafted by France, Germany and the United Kingdom, signatories of the historic 2015 nuclear agreement, damaged by Washington’s decision to withdraw from it unilaterally in 2018 – that condemned Tehran’s lack of cooperation. Days later, the 12-day war broke out between Israel, the United States and Iran.
