Two alleged drug traffickers died this Thursday afternoon in Puerto Morelos, on the Caribbean coast of Mexico, after armed men from rival gangs staged a shooting next to a luxury hotel in this tourist destination, authorities reported.

The Quintana Roo state prosecutor’s office indicated through its official Twitter account that the confrontation was between antagonistic criminal groups and that it was recorded on Bahía Petempich beach, about 30 kilometers south of Cancun, reports the AP agency.

Lucio Hernández, Secretary of State Security, indicated that the two deceased were “men who are presumed to be drug dealers” and added that “There are no tourists seriously injured or kidnapped”.

According to images released on social networks, the shots spread panic among tourists from nearby hotels who crowded together without knowing exactly what had happened.

An employee who answered the phone at the Azul Beach Resort hotel indicated, without identifying herself, that the shooting took place in the beach area and that the managers of the establishment were checking different areas of the hotel and checking if the guests were okay.

The shootings on Thursday were the most recent chapter in violence between organized crime groups in one of the most touristy areas of the country. Apparently gangs linked to the Gulf Cartel and the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel, among other groups, are fighting for control of this tourist area.

Two weeks ago another shooting in the tourist town of Tulum, south of Puerto Morelos, left two deceased foreign tourists, an Indian-born California blogger and a German-born blogger.

The confrontation was apparently staged by two groups that sell drugs on the streets of the area, according to the prosecution. Tourists dined at the restaurant and were caught in the crossfire.

In that incident, which occurred in the area called “Mini Quinta”, in reference to the Fifth Avenue of Playa del Carmen, full of bars and restaurants, three other tourists were injured.

For months there have been signs that the situation has gotten out of control in this once-quiet area of the Riviera Maya, which had been left out of the violence in the city of Cancun.

In June, two men were shot and killed on the beach in Tulum and a third person was wounded.

In nearby Playa del Carmen, the police carried out an operation in October in which they arrested 26 people after a policewoman from the city was shot and killed and her body stuffed in the trunk of a vehicle.

The government of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has high expectations for Tulum, where it has announced plans to build an international airport and a stop for the Mayan Train, which will run through the Yucatan Peninsula.
