John McAfee, The tycoon and computer man who developed the famous antivirus software, was found dead tonight (Wednesday) in the detention cell in Barcelona, a few hours after it was decided to extradite him to the US due to tax offenses.
The Madrid Ministry of Justice has confirmed local media reports that the body of 75-year-old McAfee was found in a holding cell at the Bryans 2 prison in Barcelona, where he has been held since last October. According to the announcement, attempts were made to save him, but they failed and the evidence indicates that he ended his life.
Earlier in the day, the Madrid Supreme Court approved McAfee’s extradition to the United States, where he is wanted for tax evasion that could have sent him to 30 years in prison.
According to the U.S. lawsuit, McAfee allegedly did not report tens of millions of dollars in revenue from 2016 to 2018 after serving as a cryptocurrency advisor and proceeds from speeches and the sale of his life story rights for a documentary. McAfee claimed it was a political persecution.
McAfee became famous in the 1980s when he founded a company that sold the first commercial antivirus software and thus helped launch an industry that continues to roll in billions of dollars. He continued to develop cyber defense products even after leaving the company he founded.
McAfee twice tried to run for the Libertarian Party’s presidential nomination in the two election campaigns, but failed. He repeatedly expressed his opposition to paying taxes and even admitted that he had not submitted reports for eight years.
