German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall fends off cyber attack

The German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall repelled a large-scale cyber attack on Tuesday. That’s what the company said.

Unknown hackers attempted to take down Rheinmetall’s IT systems with DDoS (distributed denial of service) attacks. According to a spokesman, the company managed to fend off the attack largely unscathed: only a Rheinmetall website operated by an external service provider was temporarily down.

“There are no indications that Rheinmetall’s internal IT infrastructure has been affected by a potential security breach,” the spokesperson said. “It does not appear that the company will suffer any financial loss.”

Analysts suspect that hackers linked to the Russian government could be behind the cyber attack. Rheinmetall supplies armored cars and other heavy weapons to Ukraine invaded by Russia.
