– The Omicron variant of Covid-19 could cause between 25 thousand and 75 thousand deaths in England in the next five months if no further measures are taken in addition to plan B: this is the new expert alert, based on a forecast model of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine which used experimental data to understand how Omicron spreads. The fear, according to the researchers, is that the variant, in England, could cause a greater number of infections and hospitalizations than in January 2021.

In particular, in the best scenario, the variant could lead to a peak of over 2 thousand daily hospitalizations, with 175 thousand hospitalizations and 24,700 deaths between 1 December this year and 30 April next year. In the worst case scenario, if no further restrictions are taken, there could be 492,000 hospitalizations and 74,800 deaths.

“Our worst case scenario suggests that we may have to endure tougher restrictions to ensure the NHS is not overwhelmed,” notes Rosanna Barnard, who co-directed the research. “Wearing the mask and the third dose may not be enough. Nobody wants another lockdown, but extreme measures may be needed to protect health services. “

Great Britain has recorded the record of cases of the Omicron variant of Covid: there are 633 in the last 24 hours. In all, 54,073 infections were reported while deaths related to the disease were 132.
