Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has described social media as one of the main threats to democracy.
Erdogan’s government is planning legislation to criminalize the distribution of Fake News and misinformation on the Internet. Critics argue that the proposed changes will tighten restrictions on freedom of expression.
“Social media, described as a symbol of freedom when it first appeared, has become one of the main sources of threat to today’s democracy,” Erdogan declared in a video appearance at an organized media conference in Istanbul.
He added: “We try to protect our people, especially the vulnerable parts of our society, from lies and misinformation, without violating the right of our citizens to receive accurate and impartial information.”
