After 4 years: Canada is looking for a suspect in the murder of a couple of Jewish billionaires

Barry and Honey Sherman were found hanging in their Toronto home in December 2017, and their double murder has yet to be solved. Toronto police are now seeking help in identifying a man who was near the home of the Jewish couple at the time of the murder: “His actions were very suspicious.”

Canadian police are seeking the public’s help in searching for a suspect in the double murder of Barry and Honey Sherman, a pair of Jewish billionaires who were found hanging from their home in Toronto in December 2017.
The police detective leading the investigation, Brandon Price of the Toronto Police Department, on Tuesday released documentation from a security camera near the Sherman couple’s home. The documentation was on December 13, 2017, the day the police estimate the two were murdered. Their bodies were found two days later.

The documentation shows the suspect walking in snowy weather near the couple’s home. At one point the suspect arrived in an area not networked with security cameras, and left after a period of time that Price defined as a “suspect.” Detective Price said it was unclear what was the reason the suspect came to the neighborhood of Barry and Honey Sherman. “We were unable to determine why he came to the neighborhood. His actions were very suspicious,” Price said.

Everyone documented near the Sherman couple’s home on the day of the murder has already been identified, except for the same suspect. The documentation is of poor quality, and police hope the suspect’s clothing – and manner of walking – will help identify him. It is not clear to the police whether it is a man or a woman, and it is estimated that the height of that person is between 1.70 and 1.80 meters. “If you identify yourself in the video please be exposed, so that you are not part of our investigation,” Price asked.

This is the first time in four years that the Canadian police have released up-to-date information on the investigation into the double murder, which shocked the top decile in Canada and the Jewish community in the country. Barry and Honey were involved in extensive philanthropic activities, donating millions of dollars to hospitals, schools and charities.

Barry Sherman founded the generic pharmaceutical company Apotex in 1974, which defines itself as one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world and employs more than 11,000 people. Forbes estimated Sherman’s fortune at about $ 3.7 billion. In 2012, Sherman retired from the company’s CEO, but continued to serve as its chairman.

The Jewish billionaire amassed enemies along the way, and in a book published in 2001 he raised the possibility that his opponents would try to assassinate him. Sherman was involved in a number of lawsuits, including a decade-long legal battle with relatives who demanded compensation from him. They claimed he removed them from society to get even richer.

The couple’s bodies were found hanging near the pool in the basement of the house. No signs of burglary were found, and police initially suspected it was murder and suicide. The couple’s four children were furious and hired private investigators, and later the police changed their version and claimed that the couple had been murdered. In 2019, private investigators completed the investigation, and did not release new details about the double murder of Barry and Honey, who were 75 and 70 years old at the time of their deaths.
