French President Emmanuel Macron promised tonight his full commitment during the French six-month presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU), stating that 2022 will be the year of the “European milestone”.
France takes over the EU presidency from Slovenia tonight at midnight and “you can count on my full commitment”, Macron said during a televised address to citizens at the end of the year.
The French president promised commitment to “controlling Europe’s borders, defense, climate transition, gender equality, building alliances with the African continent, the best oversight of major internet platforms and culture in Europe.”
According to him, 2022 should be a year of “European milestones” and proof of EU values.
France’s six-month EU presidency coincides with the presidential and parliamentary elections in France.
Although he has not yet run, according to opinion polls, Macron would win the first round of the presidential elections scheduled for the first half of April.
During Macron’s speech, the famous Eiffel Tower in Paris shone in the colors of the EU.
