Turkmenistan puts out fire in Hell’s Gate crater

Today, the President of Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, ordered to put out the fire that had been burning for years in the desert crater, which is also called the “Gate of Hell”.

The crater is located about 260 kilometers from the capital Ashgabat and is the main attraction of the small number of tourists who manage to enter Turkmenistan, which is difficult to enter.

The Turkmenportal portal reported that the crater was formed after the unsuccessful excavation of natural gas in 1971. To prevent the gas spill, geologists lit a fire and expected the gas to burn in a few weeks. The fire is burning to this day.

It is stated that the crater will be extinguished for environmental and health reasons.
