Iranian media reported the arrival in Tehran of two former Iranian prisoners who were serving sentences in US prisons and were released as part of a deal to release five US citizens from Iranian prisons.
Two more released Iranians remained in the United States at their request, and a fifth joined his family in a third country.
The American citizens released by Iran were taken to Qatar, where they were handed over to US representatives.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry previously stated that the main requirement for the exchange had been fulfilled – $6 billion of Iranian assets previously frozen in South Korea were sent to Qatar, which is acting as a mediator in negotiations between Tehran and Washington. The US administration agreed not to impose sanctions on foreign banks for transferring these assets.
