British Prime Minister Boris Johnson promised early Tuesday a “first bombardment” by the United Kingdom that will consist of a package of economic sanctions against Russia after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the dispatch of troops to the Donbas region after recognizing the autonomy of the rebel areas.

Thus, Johnson has assured that the United Kingdom could “hit Russia very hard” after sending these troops to the self-proclaimed republics of Donetsk and Lugansk, whose independence it recognized on Monday.

“There is a lot to do,” said the British ‘premier’, given the possibility that the current situation could lead to a “large-scale invasion” of Ukraine, according to information from the Sky News television network.

The president is expected to give more details before the British Parliament throughout the morning. His words have come after an emergency meeting held by the Cabinet and in which Johnson has insisted that Russia has violated Ukrainian sovereignty and has “completely broken” international law.

“All the evidence suggests that President Putin was bent on carrying out a large-scale invasion,” he asserted before clarifying that the sanctions will target not only Donbas entities but also Russia and its economic interests.

British Health Secretary Sajid Javid has indicated that the invasion of Ukraine “has already started” and has lamented that Europeans will have to wake up to a “very dark” day as tanks roll into Donetsk.

“It is clear that the Russians and President Putin have decided to attack Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he said. “This is unacceptable,” she said.
