Ukraine asks Turkey to close Black Sea straits for Russia

Ukrainian Ambassador to Ankara Vasily Bodnar appealed to the Turkish government with a request to close the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles for Russian ships. It is reported by TV channel “Rain”.

On February 23, the diplomat said that the presence of Russian warships on the coast of Ukraine is dangerous. “In the event of the outbreak of hostilities against Ukraine, when the war becomes not only de facto, but also de jure, we will ask Turkey to consider the possibility of closing the Black Sea straits for the aggressor state,” he said.

Earlier, under the pretext of exercises, Russia concentrated a significant naval grouping in the Black Sea, transferring six large landing ships from other fleets. Moscow announced the closure of a significant part of the Black Sea, practically cutting off Ukraine.

The use of the straits is regulated by the Montreux Convention signed in 1936. She declared them an international water artery and guaranteed freedom of civil navigation. In the event of a military conflict, Turkey got the opportunity to close the straits for warships of hostile countries.
