Belarusian opponent Svetlana Tijanovskaya proclaims herself “national leader” of the country

The Belarusian opponent Svetlana Tijanovskaya has proclaimed herself “national leader” of the country after accusing President Alexsander Lukashenko of committing “treason” by participating in the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Tijanovskaya has been based in Lithuania since the crisis began after the August 2020 elections, which were fraudulent in the eyes of the EU.

“Lukashenko has committed treason by making our country a participant in the invasion of Ukraine, so I declare myself the national leader of Belarus,” she said in a video posted on her official Twitter account.

The objective of the self-proclamation, Tijanovskaya makes known, “is to protect the sovereignty and independence of the country and represent it in regional security negotiations,” she makes known in a video in which she transfers all her support to the Ukrainian population.

Similarly, Tijanovskaya has called on the population to protest this coming Sunday against a constitutional referendum in which voters will decide on a possible extension of the president’s mandate until 2035, the exclusive definition of marriage as a union between a man and a woman, or even the capacity to harbor nuclear weapons.

“We, the democratic forces of Belarus, call on people to enter polling stations across the country on February 27 at 2:00 p.m. to legally protest against war and anarchy,” he said.
