Why many Russian tanks are painted with a big Z

Several Russian trucks and tanks have the letter Z chalked on the body. Sometimes it concerns other symbols as well, but it is the Z that returns remarkably often. Sometimes in a triangle or a square, but always clearly with the intention to stand out.

The letter Z does not appear in the Russian alphabet – for the sound that you pronounce as a Z, they use a letter that resembles the number 3. The tanks marked with that symbol have been noticed especially in Belgorod in recent days, less than 30 kilometers from the northeastern Ukrainian border at Kharkov.

To make it clear to other Russian tanks that it is a friendly column? “No, one symbol would suffice,” Professor Michael Clarke told Sky News. “Usually those symbols are based on location, to show where a vehicle is heading. To the northeast or northwest of a district, for example. Usually they are only applied shortly before an attack, to prevent the enemy from copying them.”
