Violent earthquake off New Caledonia coast: tsunami warning issued

East of New Caledonia, the French overseas territory in the Pacific Ocean, there was a violent earthquake on Thursday. It had a magnitude of 6.8, according to the US Geological Survey. A tsunami warning has been issued for the coasts within a radius of 300 kilometers from the epicenter of the earthquake.

Waves less than 0.3 meters above sea level are possible along the coasts of Vanuatu, the Fiji Islands and New Caledonia. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers, 279 kilometers southeast of Tadine, in New Caledonia.

There are currently no reports of possible damage or injuries.
