Ukraine, Russia prepares attack. Kiev: “We risk collapsing”

Russia is about to mobilize another 300,000 soldiers in a crucial phase of the war in Ukraine. Kiev, in difficulty due to a shortage of weapons and men, risks seeing its first defensive line collapse, according to information released by senior officers of the armed forces.

”Russia is preparing to mobilize another 300 thousand soldiers by June 1st” to send to Ukraine, says Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a joint press conference with his Finnish counterpart Alexander Stubb in Kiev. ”At the moment I cannot confirm how many people are mobilized in Ukraine”added Zelensky, according to whom ”it is not necessary to mobilize 500 thousand people”, as his former chief of staff, General Valery Zaluzhny, had proposed.

Kiev and the law to increase soldiers

In the meantime, however, Zelensky himself is working to increase the number of men ready to take to the field to face the Russian military. In recent hours, in fact, the Ukrainian leader signed a law that lowers the age to 25 years, from the previous 27, the minimum age to be drafted. Until now, the law in force protected young people, with special attention to students, preventing them from being mobilized by force. However, it is already possible to join the army voluntarily from the age of 18. Since martial law was introduced after the Russian aggression, however, men aged between 18 and 60 have been banned from leaving Ukraine.

Where Russia will attack

Kiev’s military machine is preparing for a predictable push by Russia between the end of spring and the beginning of summer. Russia could launch the attack in the area between Kharkiv and Sumy in the north or head towards Odessa in the south.

In any case, the picture for Kiev is extremely precarious according to senior officers who collaborated with General Valeri Zaluzhny, former commander of the armed forces recently replaced by General Oleksandr Syrsky. In the event of a Russian attack, there is a risk of a collapse of the Ukrainian front lines. Russia, after forcing itself in recent weeks with drones and missiles, could “pierce the front line and break it in several places”, according to officials interviewed by Politico.

Kiev’s defense risks collapse

‚ÄúThere is nothing that can help Ukraine now because there are no serious technologies that can support Ukraine for the large mass of troops that Russia will probably throw against us. We do not have these technologies and the West does not does not have them in sufficient numbers.” It is wrong, the sources add, to think that Russian strategy is limited to using ‘cannon fodder’ for offensives.

“We used Storm Shadow and SCALP missiles for a short time. The Russians study and upgrade, they don’t give us a second chance. Don’t believe the narrative that they just send soldiers to assault. They do that too, of course, by exploiting the impact linked to the greater resources available. But they learn and change strategy”. Not even sending the F-16s would be decisive: “Every weapon is needed at the right time. The F-16s were needed in 2023, they will not be good in 2024. In recent months, we have noticed that Russia has launched missiles from northern Crimea , but without explosive warheads. We didn’t understand what they were doing, then we realized: they were testing the range” in view of the arrival of enemy jets.
