Perpetrators “dangerous” and volatile: at least 16 injured after shots in New York subway

Ten people are said to have been gunned down and unexploded explosive devices found in a subway station in Brooklyn, New York, on Tuesday. This is reported by the US TV station CNN with reference to the police and fire department.

At least 16 people are said to have been injured and taken to hospital, and one person who was shot is said to be in critical condition. Ten of them suffered gunshot wounds, a spokeswoman for the New York Fire Department said at a press conference on Tuesday.

The others were hit by objects, for example, or injured by inhaling smoke or when panic broke out. Five people are in critical but not life-threatening condition in the hospital, New York City Police Chief Keechant Sewell said at the press conference. The fire brigade and police had previously spoken of at least 13 injuries based on initial findings.

Perpetrators still on the run

A man wearing a gas mask and an orange work vest was seen throwing an object at the station on 36th Street near Sunset Park around 8:30 a.m. local time (2:30 p.m. German time) before opening fire, CNN reports.

“As the train pulled into the station, the suspect put on a gas mask and opened a canister that was in his pocket, whereupon the car filled with smoke and he started shooting,” New York City Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell said at one Press conference. Some people reportedly tried to escape by jumping on trains, reports NBC News. “No active explosive devices” were found, the police said.

The perpetrator is still on the run. New York State Gov. Kathy Hochul told reporters on Tuesday that the gunman was “dangerous.” Authorities urged all citizens to be “very careful and vigilant,” she said. Anyone with information should call the police. The perpetrator brutally attacked people in the subway who were simply going about their daily lives, Hochul said.

According to initial findings, there is no suspicion of terrorism. “This is not currently being investigated as an act of terrorism,” New York City Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell said Tuesday. However, the investigation has only been running for a few hours, and the situation could still change.

Videos show plumes of smoke and injuries

Videos showed people pouring out of a subway car at the 36th Street station in the Sunset Park neighborhood surrounded by clouds of fog or smoke, some lying on the ground, blood was seen, others tended to the injured .

The police called on the population via Twitter to avoid the area. The exact background was initially unclear. The incident happened during the morning rush hour.

There were numerous delays and failures in the subway system. Schools in the area around the station are temporarily closed, US media quoted a spokesman for the New York school system as saying. Only school children are allowed in, but no one else and no one out.

US President Joe Biden was briefed on the shooting in New York, his spokeswoman Jen Psaki said on Twitter. Senior White House officials are in contact with Democratic New York Mayor Eric Adams and the police leadership. The US government stands ready to provide any needed assistance to the New York authorities should the need arise, Psaki said.

Numerous shootings in recent months

Mayor Adams and Governor Kathy Hochul also said they would be kept informed of current events.

Chuck Schumer, the US Senate Majority Leader, wrote on Twitter that he was following the situation “in our beloved Brooklyn” very closely. “I pray for all victims, their families, all those affected,” he wrote. Schumer thanked the assistants for their quick action. The senator urged citizens to take good care of themselves. “To everyone in New York: Stay safe,” he wrote.

Numerous shootings and other crimes have made headlines in New York in recent months. Mayor Adams, a former police officer who took office earlier this year, had promised to crack down on it.

The Sunset Park neighborhood used to be primarily industrial, but today many young people and families also live and work there. There is also a New York Nets basketball training facility around the corner. (Tsp, dpa, AFP)
