Four opposition members are detained in Venezuela

Venezuela’s main opposition coalition said on Monday (17) that four members of two of its political parties had been detained in recent days, as tensions rise ahead of the July presidential contest.

Gabriel Gonzalez, Javier Cisneros, Jeancarlos Rivas and Juan Iriarte, from the Vontade Popular and Vente Venezuela parties, were detained between Friday (14) and this Monday by security forces, who accuse them of conspiracy and instigating hatred, the door said. -opposition voices.

Cisneros was released on Monday night, Vente Venezuela said in a message on the X social network.

“We will denounce this new government attack in all relevant international locations. We cannot allow these types of serious violations to continue to be committed,” said opposition presidential candidate Edmundo González during a live broadcast on social media.

The attorney general’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The arrests of the four party members and a journalist, Luis Lopez, occurred amid favorable polls for González, chosen as the opposition candidate after Venezuela’s highest court upheld the ban on the winner of the primaries, María Corina Machado, from holding public office. .

Dictator Nicolas Maduro, who is seeking a third term, was cited by about 30% of voters in a recent poll, compared with 50% support for González.

Thirty-seven party members have been detained this year, including the four recent cases, said Machado, who is actively campaigning for González, alongside him on the broadcast.

Six former Machado campaign staffers are currently living in the Argentine embassy, ​​where they have requested asylum.
