From 5 countries (including Italy) new air defenses in Kiev

Italy is among the five countries that today announced the imminent delivery to Ukraine of new anti-aircraft defense batteries, increasingly valuable in responding to growing Russian raids. The announcement came during an event to celebrate NATO’s 75th anniversary in Washington, where today the summit of the alliance that was founded in this very city with the 1949 treaties began.

“Today I am announcing a historic donation of air defense systems to Ukraine,” the President of the United States said, Joe Biden“The United States, Germany, the Netherlands, Romania and Italy will deliver five additional strategic air defense systems to Ukraine in the coming months.” With NATO’s support, Biden reiterated, “Ukraine can and will stop Putin.” And if Kiev falls, the Kremlin will not stop at Ukraine, he warned in his speech at the ceremony held at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium.

The detail of the agreement

Specifically, the United States, Germany and Romania will send Patriot batteries, the Netherlands, in collaboration with other nations, will send components necessary for their operation and Italy will contribute with its Samp-T system, developed together with France. “These five strategic air defense systems will help protect Ukrainian cities, civilians and soldiers and we are coordinating closely with the Ukrainian government so that these systems can be used quickly,” reads the joint statement signed by Biden, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof and Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, as well as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who arrived in the US capital today to participate in the summit.

Zelensky thus sees one of his main requests to allies, reiterated upon his arrival, fulfilled. And the support in this crucial sector will certainly not end there. “We are working on a further announcement this year of additional strategic air defense systems for Ukraine. In addition, in the coming months, the United States and partners intend to provide Ukraine with dozens of tactical air defense systems, including Nasams, Hawk, Iris T-Slm, Iris T-Sls and Gepard,” the note continues, “these systems will further expand and strengthen Ukraine’s air defense coverage.”

“Several allies – including Canada, Norway, Spain and the United Kingdom – will continue to play a key role in providing these systems, and many other supporters of Ukraine will contribute to the supply of interceptors,” the statement continued. “Italy has been recognized as having an important role,” it was comment by Meloni. “We have focused a lot on an important issue such as air defenses, which defend above all civilians and critical infrastructures that Russia continues to attack,” the Prime Minister stressed, citing the recent bombing of a pediatric hospital, “the work of anti-aircraft defense defends above all the civilian population.”
