Cameron Munter: Serbia will be forgotten if it does not harmonize with the West
Former ambassador of the United States of America (USA) in Belgrade, Cameron Munter, stated that Serbia is facing a decision on which side of the world reality it will be in the context of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.Munter, a retired US diplomat who served as ambassador to Belgrade from 2007 to 2009, said in an interview with the Voice of America (VOA) that deviating from Western values could drive Serbia and its citizens into oblivion.

“My fear, as a friend of Serbia and its people that I consider to belong to the European Union, is that it will make it unimportant. It would be a pity because Serbia has a lot to offer the West. But one thing is to say that you want to belong to the West.” and on the other hand, you are talking about an alleged violation of your self-esteem, “Munter said.

He said that the citizens and the leadership of Serbia need to make the choice they want: an authoritarian one that deals with the media, without opposition and essentially agrees with Russia’s reckless and unjustified attack on Ukraine, or to live European life.

“If they fail, I don’t think anyone will punish them. They will simply be forgotten,” Munter said.
