The festival originates from a legend of the people’s uprising against the oppression of the aristocracy in the 12th century. Today, throwing oranges is considered an activity to recreate the spirit of the old uprising.

Participants are divided into two sides, the warriors on the carriage symbolize the aristocracy and pedestrians under the road representing the peasantry. They threw oranges at each other, recreating the historic battle in a vibrant and colorful way. Each year, hundreds of tons of oranges from Sicily Island are brought back to serve this festival.

Anyone can participate by registering to one of the nine teams throwing cam in the road or joining the cavalry on the horse -drawn carriage. If you just want to observe without being thrown oranges, visitors should wear a red phrygian hat – a wool hat shaped like a red socks, symbolizing the spirit of freedom and the uprising of the people against tyrant.
During the festival, those who wear red phrygian hats will be identified as the audience and are not thrown. The organizers encourage visitors to buy phrygian hats at the booths in the entrance to the old town to avoid becoming the target of the orange rains from the teams.
