Panic at 30,000 feet: the pilot had a heart attack

A pilot on a flight from Tenerife to Birmingham suffered a heart attack at an altitude of 30,000 feet, when there were about 220 passengers on board. An officer in the cockpit had to take control of the plane, and the passengers said that the lights on the plane started flashing and that some of the flight attendants were seen crying while looking for a medical staff member.

“We woke up to chaos,” said one of the passengers. “The plane began to descend quickly, in preparation for an emergency landing, and the children began to cry.”

The plane, a modelAirbus A321landed in Porto at 2:11 am. Medical teams immediately boarded the cockpit and evacuated the pilot to a local hospital. The passengers remained at the airport in Portugal for about 13 hours until a replacement flight arrived with new crew, and some claimed they were not given a hotel or adequate assistance. “We were told that the accommodation is too expensive,” said one of them.
