Volker Türk: “The main thing is to end the war in Gaza”

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk spoke at the opening of the UN Human Rights Council session, saying that the highest priority is to end the war in Gaza and accusing Israel of violating international law in the Palestinian territories.

“Ending this war and preventing a regional war is an immediate priority. States cannot leave unanswered the brazen violation of international law, including binding UN Security Council resolutions and decisions of the International Court of Justice,” he said.

The international official also stated that the civilian population of Ukraine found itself in a circle of terror due to the incessant Russian attacks. He also noted the situation in the territories of the Kursk region occupied by Ukraine. Turk recalled the situation in Sudan and the increase in the number of executions in Saudi Arabia.

“In many parts of the world, we see the same dynamic: the desire to consolidate power at the expense of human rights,” the UN official said.
