Many victims of flash flood in Lao Cai village are in critical condition, suffering from psychological trauma

Bao Yen General Hospital received 18 patients from the flash flood in Lang Nu village, Phuc Khanh commune, of which two were in critical condition and many suffered psychological trauma.

On the evening of September 10, a hospital representative said that 18 patients were being treated in the Emergency – Intensive Care and Anti-Poison Department in a state of multiple injuries, with abrasions all over their bodies, pain, and difficulty moving. The two most serious patients required ventilators, while the remaining cases had broken bones, internal injuries, skin damage, and psychological trauma.

Disaster trauma occurs when a person experiences a traumatic event, such as a hurricane, flood, or earthquake, that causes intense feelings of stress and can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Symptoms may include haunting images of the event, feelings of anxiety, and difficulty recovering emotionally.

They were the lucky residents who escaped death in the flash flood that almost leveled Lang Nu village in Phuc Khanh commune, Bao Yen district. The village has 167 households with 760 people. As of the morning of September 11, 22 people were confirmed dead and 73 people were still missing. About 46 people were safe, the rest were mostly unable to make it. 19 people were injured, of which 5 were treated at Lao Cai Provincial General Hospital, and one was transferred to Viet Duc Hospital (Hanoi).

As soon as the hospital received information about the landslide, it raised the red alert and mobilized all medical staff to respond to the disaster. The hospital arranged a mobile emergency team of 6 people, including 2 doctors and 4 medical staff, to be on duty at the scene to receive the victims. The number of victims is expected to continue to increase.

The area where the flash flood occurred is far from the center, traffic is cut off, communication is completely lost, so rescue and relief work is facing many difficulties. The road from the flooded area has many sections that are severely damaged and have landslides, the hospital has come up with a plan to transport the victims by truck from the scene to the hospital.

Local authorities mobilized about 100 police, military, and militia to search for the missing while waiting for support from the province and Military Region 2.

Over the past two days, due to the effects of storm Yagi, the hospital was flooded more than a meter deep. The water only fully receded on the afternoon of September 10
