Vuitton Cup: Luna Rossa KO in the fifth round against American Magic

Fifth race and first defeat for Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli against American Magic in the semifinal of the Louis Vuitton Cup, taking place in the sea off Barcelona. The Italian AC75, with the pennant of the Circolo della Vela Sicilia, still remains ahead of the Americans from the New York Yacht Club, who obtained the first point. The situation now sees the sailors with the Sicilian Francesco Bruni at the helm and the Australian Jimmy Spithill in the lead by 4-1 and, therefore, always one step away from the final of the competition reserved for the America’s Cup challengers.

For the Italian boat it would be the fifth final: up to now it has won twice, then going to the America’s Cup, and it has lost twice. After a very close battle, with several crossings and several penalties decided by the jury, Luna Rossa came off the foils at the beginning of the fifth leg of the race, due to the very light wind, then leaving “free field” to the Americans.
