Intel employees are biting their nails: the global company received a huge offer

Chip giant Qualcomm submitted a purchase offer to its rival Intel in recent days, according to people familiar with the matter, as published today (Friday) in the Wall Street Journal.

A deal would be huge for Intel, which had a market value of about $87 billion as of early Friday, as the chipmaker struggles through one of the most significant crises in its five-decade history.

In the media and the two indices will agree, a deal of this size will likely require an antitrust review. To complete the deal, Qualcomm may sell assets or parts of Intel to other buyers.

Intel, once the world’s most valuable chip company, has seen its shares fall about 60% so far this year. The company once had a market capitalization of more than $290 billion at its peak. The stock rose 7% on Friday after the Journal reported the offer. Qualcomm stock, which has a market value of about $185 billion, fell about 4%.

Qualcomm is a leading supplier of chips for smart phones, including those that manage communication between phones and cellular antennas. It is one of the most important suppliers for Apple’s iPhones, among a variety of other devices.
