Monika Maron on freedom of expression at PEN Berlin: AfD and the other 70 percent.

There is a lot of effort being made to get into the soul of AfD voters. But who actually takes the concerns of those who do not belong to this 30 percent seriously? Observations from a panel evening at PEN Berlin.

Night and autumnal chill have descended on the small stage as Monika Maron speaks out for AfD voters. The conversation in Potsdam’s “Waschhaus” has seemed to revolve around gender for what feels like an eternity, which Maron famously sees as hostile to creativity and aggressive. It is the final event of the highly acclaimed “You’re still allowed to say that” series by PEN Berlin, which explores the situation of freedom of expression in Thuringia, Saxony and now Brandenburg. But of course, just a few days before the Brandenburg state election, the AfD is also on the agenda.
