France appoints a right-wing government and manages to avoid the crisis that threatened Emmanuel Macron

After months of waiting, there was a white smoke. “We have a government” in France. A right-wing government, with mostly unknowns and a cabinet of 39 ministers, was nominated at 10 to 8 on Saturday evening.

Their names were read out by the Secretary General of the Presidency, Alexis Kohler, at the Elysée Palace, after weeks of intense negotiations amid a political crisis threatening President Emmanuel Macron.

The greatest weight is the Minister of the Interior Bruno Retalilleu, a man of the right and with a tough immigration policy to apply. There is no one among the nominees who could be a presidential candidate in an early election.

The chancellor is the centrist Jean Noel Barrot, and the economy minister is Antoine Armand, who heads the youngest economic team the country has ever had and is a friend of former prime minister Gabriel Attal.

Annie Genevard is the Minister of Agriculture and Rachida Dati, the former Sarkozy spokeswoman, has been reconfirmed as Minister of Culture. Maud Bregeon will be the Government spokeswoman and Didier Migaud has been elected Minister of Justice.

Paradoxical. In the legislative elections, the left, united in the New Popular Bloc, won the largest number of seats and they were not invited to this government, where the right predominates.

Centrist MODEN finally agreed to participate after fearing that it would be part of a government that was too conservative.

This governmental architecture must be approved by the Legislative Assembly if there is a vote of no confidence.

This right-wing cabinet produces a huge concern for a Parliament that could reject it.

Prime Minister Michel Barnier began confirming his ministers at 5 p.m., after having handed the final list to President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday. The first list was rejected by Macron because it was not a unity government and left Barnier on the verge of resigning at midnight last Thursday.

Their fear is that Michel Barnier, the prime minister, wants to raise taxes to deal with France’s huge public debt. To do this, they have protected the Ministry of the Economy with young Macronists.

The nomination came as thousands of French people took part in Demonstrations in Paris and 50 other French cities calling for the resignation of Emmanuel Macron y Michele Barnier.

The Yellow Vests and the anarchist Black Blocs, dressed in black, returned to the marches in Paris between the Place de la Bastille and the Place de la Nation.

Jean Luc Mélenchon, leader of La France Insoumise, believes that Barnier’s government “has no future” and that it will be “defeated in the National Assembly.”
