New centre-right government unveiled in France

On the evening of September 21, the head of the French presidential administration, Alexis Kohler, presented the composition of the new government formed by Prime Minister Michel Barnier. It does not include representatives of the “New Popular Front”, which took first place in the elections, nor the far-right “National Rally”.

Sébastien Lecornu retained his post as Minister of Defence, and Jean-Noël Barrot was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs. Both represent the president’s “Renaissance” party. Bruno Retaillo became Minister of the Interior, and Rachida Dati became Minister of Culture.

Political opponents have reason to accuse President Emmanuel Macron of ignoring the outcome of the parliamentary elections. “This government has no future. Macronism has returned through the back door,” said National Rally leader Jordan Bardella.

The New Popular Front called on its supporters to demonstrate against the president. The demonstrations took place in 67 towns, but the turnout was significantly lower than the organizers had expected.
