Olaf Scholz is threatened with a “massive blow” – Sunday’s election result could topple the entire German government

Today, Sunday, Germans will vote again in important regional elections, this time in the state of Brandenburg, which surrounds Berlin. Political scientists say bluntly that if the chancellor Olaf Scholzin the government coalition also now suffers a crushing defeat, Scholz’s fate is sealed.

The social democratic SPD led by Scholz also admits the facts. Party representatives say online magazine Politico in an interview that a defeat in Brandeburg would very likely mean the resignation of the government.

German waves according to the opinion polls cited by Scholz’s SPD, they compete evenly with the far-right AfD in the elections. The pollsters promise a fair 25 percent support for both. Next come the Christian Democratic CDU and the far-left BSW with around 15 percent support.

The Greens and the Left, which are part of Scholz’s government coalition along with the SPD, are not expected to cross Brandenburg’s four percent vote threshold. The liberals who are also in the government will not take part in the Brandenburg state elections.

Brandenburg is an exceptionally important state for Scholz because the SPD has traditionally been very strong there. SPD president of Brandenburg Dietmar Woidke has been in power for three seasons in a row.

“If the SPD does not win in Brandenburg, it will be a massive blow to the party,” a professor at the University of Potsdam Philipp Thomeczek commented to Reuters.

The far-right party AfD, or Alternative für Deutschland, took a landslide victory in the state elections in Thuringia and Saxony at the beginning of September. The three parties in Scholz’s government coalition, i.e. the Social Democrats, the Greens and the Free Democrats, received slightly less than 15 percent of the vote in each state.
